It was only a few months ago that I could not even get both feet off the ground when attempting the elusive “Human Flag” bar/calisthenic movement where you hang onto a vertical bar then fly your body horizontally like a flag in the wind. My “ultimate goal” with the bar is to be able to flag off of a street pole in public with a Lean Berets shirt! While I am not quite there yet, I did get an impressive “Freedom Flag” for 20 full seconds on my CrossCore bar at home.
Freedom from what? Gravity and chains of doubt and criticism. I just kept working at it one small movement at a time. Get ON the bar and focus on form and structure–you’ll surprise yourself by the progress you will make. Have fun.
*I’m shaking the crap out of the bar to turn on my lat and shoulder muscles. It’s a little neurological trick similar to powerlifters or kettlebell folks that “stomp” their feet before heavy lifts. Also serves as a mental focus drill to ramp psychological arousal levels towards peak of the “Zone” of optimal function too.
