We began offering Posture Workshops for corporate clients and parents recently working extensively and body alignment and proper angles for study and work. Here’s why…be inspired by the Grundy Center Spartans in Iowa and their “Thinking Bodies” Noble Purpose theme for 2014.
Posture matters. Historically, our elders knew that posture directly tied into learning in the classroom–and growing up healthy. Today’s kids are at high risk for postural deformity to the lack of postural education and decreasing physical education along with less recess and free play periods–their poor posture and lack of physical literacy has led to significantly higher injury rates with today’s children–most do not know how to move well, and when they try, their body mechanics and posture does not support efficient and SAFE movement.
In Iowa, they are doing extremely important work to rebuild classical standards for optimal learning–good posture and fit youth create a rich environment for higher learning. These kids are our future, and they are looking good, sitting straight, and getting quality physical education.
On physical education, the Spartans know how to use gravity to create better posture. They routinely use hanging drills on a straight pull up bar and are being taught proper biomechanics, safety, and quality of movement so critical for youth development. Hanging properly is good for spinal decompression, developing healthy shoulders, and for increasing good body awareness while increasing strength. The Spartans are also learning one of THE most important human movement patterns to know and use–the deep squat which is critical for independent living, healthy aging, and working safely.
