Thank you for attending the “D.B. Dill Historical Lecture” on “Mental Stability THROUGH the Physical: We Need a Renaissance” for the 2023 ACSM Annual Meeting and World Congresses. Here are a few references to support my presentation.
Equipment: I had some inquiries about where to buy some of the equipment featured in my presentations like the Indian Clubs, Maces, and Health Wands. Here are my preferred vendors for modern versions of the vintage equipment.
Presentation Learning Objectives:
- Understand the difference and philosophy between current PE/physical activity programs and classical PE methods.
- Understand the importance of actively promoting proper physical education for our youth and how it impacts mental stability and national security.
Leisure Quote & Movement Slide Show (Pre-Presentation)
Books: I’ll include a suggested reading list I prepared for military cadets, but a few key areas of focus would be: military physical fitness history, leisure and how to spend it wisely, and anything written by authors such as Jay Bryan Nash, Bonnie Prudden, LP Jacks to name a few.
“The Motivation Factor” Documentary Film: Our film centers around the history of LaSierra High School PE in Carmichael, CA and what history knew about the “classical” approach to teaching physical education. The film was made by Doug Orchard Films. I was the Executive Producer and PE Historian.
YouTube Videos: I have a number of PE videos on my YouTube channel under “The Lean Berets”. Some of my video playlists focus on Bonnie Prudden or what I call “PE 101” basics for parents and elementary children. Feel free to browse and explore. Here are a few specific playlist links.
Handouts: Military, PE History, etc.
Podcast: Here’s my podcast where I discuss PE and other cultural topics.
Again, it was an honor to present at the 2023 D.B. Dill Historical Lecture for ACSM in Denver.
