“The difficulty is that which can be done immediately; the Impossible that which takes a little longer.” –George Santayana
I’ve been working hard lately–not “long” in terms of volume, but rather hard with quality and focus on form while doing my bars and calisthenics. I really feel like a child learning these movements. It’s challenging–but in a playful exploratory way. Much like children during play, I have felt a true joy and enthusiasm when reaching my goals…even if small.
One of my newest tricks is the elusive “Human Flag” position. It was only weeks ago I was not sure if it was even possible! Last weekend with the help of fellow Lean Beret Kevin Rail’s encouragement, I was able to “stick” a flag position and hold it for a brief and glorious moment. While no where near where others are with human flags, the brief hold in the basic position reminded me of possibilities and the lesson that EFFORT=RESULTS.
My complete 100% childlike elation and JOY was captured on video by Kevin. I would like to share it with a question for adults, “How often do adults get this kind of true joy out of a training session?” It’s worth asking. Not that every trip to the gym or bar will produce this kind of excitement, but even once in a while, it’s worth feeling again. Excitement. Thrill of being on the fitness edge. Joy of movement. Wonderment. Exploration. Achievement. WORK/PLAY.
I’ve been coaching and fitness training people for fifteen years now professionally. If I can encourage one point, it is to stay in the game consistently over time. Even if small and simple–stay in it. Do your work–and don’t forget to play and enjoy moving.
See y’all at the bar or beyond…RJ
