Let me set the table for you. I recently met up with my friend Mark who I haven’t seen in over 15 years. We were both in Vegas attending to different business of different nature. I was there for work training and he had a Fantasy Football draft with a couple friends from home. The sequence of events that proceeded to unfold just need to be made common knowledge.
As we were catching up, Mark and his one friend Glenn, both told me about their recent victories with weight loss. Back in high school, Mark was one of the leanest kids I knew, but over the course of time he had ballooned up to about 240 lbs.
Upon hearing this news, I immediately went into coaching mode and asked what his motivation was for finally making changes. Everyone varies in this department but he point blank looked me in the eye and said, “I got tired of being a fatass!” Those were his words, not mine, so don’t shoot the messenger.
At the time of our meeting, he was a svelte 185 lbs, and I’m guessing Glenn was around 215 or so. Because I’m a big fan of success stories, I was on the edge of my seat with excitement to hear theirs. Then when they unveiled their game plan to me, I shook my head and smiled.
I was expecting to hear words like CrossFit, AMRAP, WODs, Tabata Training, Insanity and P90X, but it was far from all that. In fact, it was the polar opposite. They were both adamant about this form of exercise known as walking. Did you ever hear of it?
From what I was able to gather, you open the door to your house, move one leg in front of the other and alternate back and forth in a rhythmic pattern for an extended period of time. It doesn’t cost a dime and causes little if any impact to your joints.
Imagine that. Something you have complete access to every day for FREE that helps you lose weight and get in shape. Where has that secret been hidden? NOWHERE! That’s where.
It turns out they both dedicated time every single day to walking and the blubber slowly and steadily disintegrated. Glenn actually lost over 100 freakin pounds!
Here’s where the plot thickens. They coupled their exercise efforts with healthy eating habits. I didn’t hear a word about the Paleo, Atkins, Zone Perfect, Mediterranean, Hungarian, Brazilian or Charlie freakin Chan diets either. All they did was eliminate the junk food and cut down their portion sizes.
What I’m getting at here is you are always being bombarded with miracle fixes and fastlane-to-success programs that allow you to work less and achieve more. Be aware of the these quick fixes. Nothing worth having in life is ever achievable in zero point two seconds.
It’s not rocket science folks. Be patient, make small changes to your daily lifestyle and YOU will be victorious too. In my profession, it always come down to making things as simplistic as possible, and that’s what you should focus on. Stick to the basics and you will do just fine.
